Regardless of the issues with the locking and security mechanism, it sounds to me like the radio isn’t getting a complete connection with the wiring harness in the back. I would start by, with the radio out, making sure that the wiring and antenna harnesses are firmly clipped to their positions in the cage, so that when the radio is inserted it makes a good connection.
If you can restore the function that way, and perhaps if necessary by pressing gently on the radio, you’ll know if the electronics and connections are good. In my view, the inability of the radio to latch securely in place will be a problem if it prevents you from getting a sustainable and clean connection (or vibrates loose over time)
Good luck.
