I commented earlier about my experience with the positive battery cable, and just wanted to reiterate that my experience is consistent with your symptoms. Once started, regardless of distance the car always ran great. The issue was around starting cycles. Short cycles (like stopping and starting after short drives doing errands), starting would get more erratic - strong crank but not always firing. After long drives (like my old commute or your beach trip), it behaved perfectly normally.
The technicians theory at the time was that the short trips with the impeded cable didn’t have enough running time for the alternator to refresh the battery adequately and when trying to start the impeded cable and weaker charge combined to not have enough power to both run the starter motor and run the electronics to fire the fuel.
It was remarkable how much the new cable rejuvenated the car - not just the starting, but other electrical things I hadn’t really noticed seemed to disappear.
Doing a voltage drop test on the cable under load will tell you how impaired the cable is when the car is trying to start.
