They dealers want to sell you what they have. I've seen several new manual '02 and '03 wagons at local MA dealers, so check around dilligently, and something w/come up. Try to drive a manual sedan or something used in a MY'02 or MY'03), the driving w/be very similar, and will give you a baseline. If it's used, the dealer may be more open to a 'real', extended, test drive, too.

My std shift seems very clunky to me but it's an early '99 and most of the others I've driven are better. Newer models have improved shifting linkage/internals, in theory.

I don't think safety is an issue w/the 17" wheels; you should definately drive an aero if you have the budget. You WILL need snow's w/an aero, though, if you see that stuff; I've always used them anyway. I think the aero is a better drive w/the extra power, as I end up doing more shifting around town than I feel I should(I have the earlier 170hp model). I think the now std 185 hp is better on that issue from several drives.

FWIW, the sid's are notoriously low at dealers; it doesn't take much idling time at 0 mph/0 mpg to bring down the average dramatically. I'm in the mid 20's for mixed driving w/more intown/city driving and snow tires. High, high 20's for highway at above 10 over speeds. (I've never had more than a tank of highway only driving, and have never seen 30+ for an avg except on the way down after a reset! Have seen several 29mpg's, though)
