1) this is a common rule, especially for high mileage vehicles. I'd stick with whatever oil the car originally started to run with. Lots of horror stories posted about going from regular oil to synthetic then watching it drip out onto the driveway.
2) just before my last oil change at 88K miles (I do them every 6K), I put in a quart of Risoline (an engine cleaner), then drove it about 200 miles and changed the oil. The drained out oil was extremely dark and funky, and when I filled with new oil, the engine sounded perfect. It also has better throttle response and power. The previous owner had followed the every 10K oil change routine until 50K miles, so I figured it was time to clean out the gunk. It made a noticable difference.
4) new metal washers are very cheap (you can get a 10 pack for about $2), and you'll be less likely to over torque the drain bolt.
