I, too, came from a string of Japanese cars. I drove them both when I bought my '01 wagon and went with the V-6. The more conventional torque delivery (less turbo lag) and less vibration were the swaying factors.
The V-6 has had a better service record than the LPT 4. The Saab techs that post here will attest to that. The issue with the timing belt tensioners is a known one and is avoidable as long as you aren't trying to be cheap with maintenance.
The issue with the service costs is a real one. Saab's are one of the very few cars where an extended warranty makes sense. Four or V-6, the best bet is to seek out a CPO car from a dealer.
