it sounds like you've installed the seat correctly.
i have two 9-5s: 2000 aero sedan and 2002 linear wagon. i have had a graco snugride base in the middle seat of each car. i used the seatbelt in the 2000 and i used the LATCH anchors in the 2002 (keep in mind that the car has two LATCH anchors for each of the outboard seats - i used the inner LATCH on each side to accommodate the base in the middle seat). one thing i found is that the saab middle seat is fairly narrow; while the base fits fine, accessing the outboard seatbelt anchors was tough for passengers. consequently, adults in the backseat alongside the graco base were uncomfortable. BTW, dear son outgrew the snugride after six months (when he passed the 20 lb limit on the seat). FWIW, we also had a kolcraft universal car seat carrier (about $50 and less than 10 lbs) which was great!
we retired the snugride (waiting in the basement for child #2) and now have britax marathons in each car. again, i installed each seat in the middle position. in the 2000 i used the shoulder belt and in the 2002 i used the inner LATCH anchor from each of the outboard seats. dear son will remain REAR-FACING in the marathon until he passes the 33 lb limit, at which time i'll turn the seat around to be forward-facing.
we have heard mixed opinions on rear vs front facing child seats after 1 yr and 20 lbs, but we are convinced that rear-facing is safest as long as the seat allows it. our son is now 13 months, 30 inches and 23+ lbs.
