I just bought an 01 9-5 wagon with 30k. I was looking at VWs as well (and was moving on from my 93 Passat wagon, which is not the same as the 10-year-younger one you are looking at, of course). If you are going to go that route, make sure you do more than just test drive. The seats are different (the 9-5 fits me much better), the drive feel is different, etc... Know anyone who owns one? I recommend borrowing it for a few days if you can.
Also, you will not have as good quality with the VW -- especially when it comes to the electrical system. But that's just my opinion.
