Yes, it does seem contradictory to rate the car a pick but that the most popular models (4-cylinders) are not. And its a point I'd raise with the editor if I was given the chance!
I happen to really like VW's -- and have looked at the Passat a few times as alternatives to what I have bought.
But I always find friends/neighbors/ co-workers with MORE VW problems, not less VW problems.
There is a thread on this elsewhere that I saw yesterday. And the issues do go way beyond the coil pack.
"If its any consolation, our VW Passat, bought new in 99, is a piece of crap . We did our homework before buying it, too. We've sunk so much $$ other than regular maintenance that it makes me sick. Just spent $660 this past weekend for the "oil cooler" when we just spent $700 6 weeks ago for a new thermostat and temperature sensor! The car has only been to VW dealers for service. This will be addressed up to the top of the VW company.
Good luck with your car, I feel for you.
We've had other problems with various things in the past that have taken months/years to resolve, so we're getting "battle ready" for this one. I just got my Consumer Reports yesterday and saw my car listed as one of the "most unreliable" used cars. It kills me that in 99 it was rated a good car. Oh well...."
Notice, too, that the Audi's don't do that well (mostly same/similar engines, too)
Pete
