After reading your post again, and in addition to the alternators and coils, Saturn had huge oil consumption issues. An S series Saturn was never a car you could not check the oil on between changes. Many folks who were religious about 3k oil changes still had major oil consumption issues. A Saturn that didn't use oil was the exception, and many, many cars had total rebuilds, new rings, valve guides and every other oil issue part as they never did assign it to a specific problem or maybe I should say Saturn never admitted any specific problem.
You had to go through an oil consumption test to qualify for warranty work, which was for lots of folks was a bigger hassle than just minding the oil level. Using a quart every 1,500 miles was relatively normal. That kind of consumption would get you a new engine from Saab.
