When the (red) DIC failed in the 60-70k mile range on my '96 900SET, the onset was gradual over a few days: rough idle, rough running, lack of power, finally CEL, etc. Plenty of time to diagnose or swap in a spare to confirm diagnosis. But, I understand from reading the 9-5 board, that maybe the black DIC tends to die rather more abruptly? I'll defer to the experts on that issue.
