The key is that he doesn't know a thing about cars and can't do any repairs himself. He'd be a sitting duck for mechanics with ANY European car, compounded by the fact that it's even harder to find someone who works on (and knows what they're doing) C900's. And I agree with you that the Japanese cars aren't perfect (I wouldn't recommend Nissans at all)by any means. But in terms of bang for the buck for someone of limited means and no mechanical skills, something like a Civic, Corolla, or Impressa would be the best bet. Also, larger cars like Accord's, Camry's and Legacies are much more complicated, cost more to maintain, and at his price point don't give a lot of bang for the buck. After 100K I'd much rather thave a Saab than a Japanese car (and I bet I spend less on maintenance), but you have to be able to do some work yourself or at least be knowledgeable enough to not avoid hosed down by mechanics.
