Curious what the SAAB brotherhood would recommend.
Both turbos are inhand....the stock one off my 91 - the water cooled Mitsubishi, which is leaking by the seals (oil in the IC piping). Engine only has about 130K on the clock.
The challenger - the Garrett T3 from my 87 trans donor. Oil cooled. Also needs rebuilt, passing oil. Simplicity of the oil cooling, less clutter underhood (water lines). The T3 waste gate area of the turbine is of course cracked just like all T3's that I have ever seen (Volvo/Ford, same story). I've not yet heard of these cracks causing any reliability failure of the turbine housing. Running Mobil 1 solves the problem of potential coking in the drain line, so you've got the sledgehammer simple T3.
Rebuild costs will be a wash I'm told. A new custom oil feed line is foreseen (Kinugawa Turbo, about $50 for SS braided teflon).
What would you do, and why?
