I am just a little embarrassed to report that the culprit was the negative battery cable. I had cleaned all three terminal ends and assured that the two grounding points were clean and making good contact, but failed to suspect/inspect the cable itself. Of course, it "looked" fine. I had a new positive cable made a few years back.
I discovered the problem when I was amidst a no-start situation. I connected a jumper cable from the negative battery post to the engine lifting eyelet bracket, while the ignition key was in the "on" position, which immediately produced "juice". Then changed it out with a used cable I had on hand.
Thank you, Landjet, for all your help. After the repair yesterday, we took the car to the launch and had a successful day clamming on the flats of the Niantic River (Connecticut), and the car performed flawlessly. What a relief!
