My take on this Posted by Notnoel [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: LandJet for 500 Man I am OUT OF LUCK. I'm the only stoo, Landjet ![]() ![]() |
Having done this a couple of times more than I wish I had to admit to, here's how I approach it:
1) front of car on jack stands on both sides.
2) spacer thingys in both upper A-arms ( I just use pieces of oak (hard) cut to the right size).
3) undo both boot retainers on both axles.
4) slide a narrow, clean piece of cardboard into the cavity where the the axle resides;this is to keep the greasy end of the tripod from dropping into a world of grime and grit when you pull it out (I, of course, figured this out the hard way and had to clean and regrease the tripod).
5) remove both lower ball joint bolts and pull both ball joint out of the lower A-Arms completely.
6) remove both upper ball joint bolt and gently wiggle the upper ball joint half way out (until the back hole in the ball joint lines up with the front hole on the upper A-Arm), then put the bolt in to hold that assembly in the half way out position.
7) one side at a time, grab the bottom of the brake disc and pull it toward you, thereby pulling the axle out until it clears the drive cup on the transmission. Then use a coat hanger, or short section of nylon rope or other rube goldberg method to hold the axle in that position. Take a plastic bag and cover the now exposed tripod bearing to keep it from getting gnarly (see comment above).
8) go do the same thing to the other side.
9) go pull the lump out of the car.
