After putting the car up on jack stands, I prop up the upper a-arms using 1-1/4" nuts as spacers, pull the ball bolts, and pull the spindles out enough so that the tripod joints clear inner drivers when the lump is pulled. Don't have to deal with messing with the drive axle bolts.
To temporarily keep everything together, push the ball joints back in and shove the bolts through them. To protect the tripods, I put sandwich bags over them. That way the car can be rolled around when needed.
There are lots of ways to skin this particular cat (apologies to the local SPCA and to Miss Thing [my cat] for putting it this way.)
