Based on your description I don't think the linkage adjustment is the problem. Being a freshly rebuilt unit (so assuming that both inner drivers had good splines when the unit was rebuilt) something to check would be the sleeve that connects the front counter gear with the cluster gear. One step in the assembly process is sliding the sleeve along so that it connects the two gears and then sliding a snap ring into place to fix the sleeve so it won't slide back and disconnect them. If the rebuilder forgot to slide the sleeve into place you'll have no torque to the cluster gear so no torque transmission in 1-4 or reverse. Also if the sleeve was in place but not the snap ring then the sleeve will eventually slide forward and you'll get the same problem. If that sleeve is the issue then you WILL have torque directly to the mainshaft in fifth gear only so try shifting to fifth and then see if the car wants to move. If you find that there is torque to the wheels in fifth gear then you can access the sleeve and snap ring through the fifth gear cover on the passenger side of the unit and fix it.
