Yeah, I should have said that the digit and forks are all totally visible when the access cover with the dipstick is removed although with the unit in the car you may need to use a small mirror to get the viewing angle on them.
Another thought is that if the clutch shaft was not inserted fully, so that the splines failed to lock into the upper chainwheel, the car wouldn't move but I'm not sure you could even install the clutch shaft cover with the shaft that far out and its tip wouldn't be inserted in the pilot bearing either.
