I installed the new-in-box expansion valve, did another vacuum draw-down and made another attempt at a system charge after watching the rock-solid vacuum numbers hold overnight.

But problem persisted: the 134 cannister is upside down on the scale and after hooking up the low- and high-side hoses, the low side was leaping up to 60-70+ PSI every time I cracked the low-side valve. I was very patient this particular morning so I experimented with just barely cracking the low-side knob to let in a small puff (I'm imagining as such at least) of 134 and then watching the numbers. Eventually after a few rounds of this, the high-side number started creeping upwards while the low-side would jump high but then sink down to 30-40 PSI over about 10 seconds.

I set the idle to around 2000 and spent about one hour metering 134 into the system in very short bursts and then watching the low-side jump to 70 and then drop to 30. The refrigerant scale was showing about .004 lb. decrease in weight every time I did this.

The low-side AC-system hose between evaporator and compressor started showing ice at each end on the aluminum fittings and the interior was showing cool air. This seemed like a good indicator.

The particular morning wasn't hot at all so the gauge numbers (low: 47, high: 140) corresponded with the ambient air temp of 75F according to my chart.

But this cycle stopped after about 1.4 lbs. ingested; it wasn't sipping any more refrigerant.

I'm going to drive it and see how it does with a genuine undercharged system before attempting that last .6 lb. remainder. It's pretty novel to have any cool air coming out of the dash vents.

I'm still suspicious of the expansion valve.
