You should be able to see the compressor clutch engage, and hear it click as it engages, under the hood. The compressor is easily visible at the top of the engine.



If the compressor clutch is not activating I would first check the AC fuse and relay. If those are OK hook up a manifold gauge set to check for refrigerant pressure in the system. I'm not sure when the low-pressure safety cutoff trips on the C900 but on most cars it will not permit the compressor to run if there is under about 20 psi on the low side of the AC system.

Now if the compressor does run that does not necessarily mean there is sufficient refrigerant for cooling to take place. To determine that you would need to connect a gauge set to check high and low pressures while the system operates. Of course there are other maladies that can affect operation but on older cars leaks are common.

Presumably the AC system has at some point been converted from its original R12a to R134a. If not that's something that will need to be done.
