That it IS documented somewhere on the web. Doing a search on this BB should bring up the posts. Look for ones by Roman, if memory serves. I had this done on my car, by that I mean I had the shop do it. It apparently wasn't terribly difficult, just 2-3 days work, maybe less. One not so obvious thing is jumping the wire connector to the automatic gear selector (normally disables starting unless the car is in Park). In my car, either ECU worked, and I couldn't tell a difference between them. Don't forget that the intermediate shaft/bearing is also different, one says A and one says M. I highly recommend this procedure, despite the rather high cost, though just getting the automatic rebuilt is high in itself. I justified it on the extra longevity of the manual transmission and much lower fuel usage. In my car, it was at least 2 mpg on the highway. Stretched over 150k miles (that's assuming the automatic rebuilt goes that far!), assuming $2 a gallon for gas, that's a savings of over $700. Granted, it may take 10 years, but what the heck. The BEST part about the conversion (aside from being able to push/roll start the car when the battery/starter dies), was the apparent performance increase. I have done quite a few modifications to my car power wise, but converting to manual made the biggest perceived increase in power, though nothing was done to the engine.
