You are right about hot air wanting to be bigger than cool air...
It's also true that as air expands (like when it leaves the combustion chamber for the exhaust DP, or goes through the turbo) it cools...so the more it can expand, the cooler it gets...Zeke mentioned the benefits of a cooler EGT earlier.
There are so many variables in a discussion of this topic...and I made the unfortunate mistake of over-simplifying by neglecting the effects of one on the others! Well, the discussion has been good...and I'm sure that there have been some Theses written on such things...and there are still studies going on...and on...and on... on the matter...Which is good. And turbos make it all the more complicated because it links exhaust conditions to intake conditions. Oh geeze!!!
But I digress, and ramble. My appologies. (I guess I really love this stuff)
