- fitting a 3" system (JT) gave my auto transmission car much more flexibility, with faster spool-up (the auto masks turbo lag anyway) and much better real-world overtaking ability. Dyno test suggested an extra 10 bhp (5%, OK) but the car is much nicer to drive, really solid performance.
The cost - well, it might make sense to wait till the old system disintegrates, then pay the premium. The dollar is pretty soggy, I agree, but there must be locally-made alternatives.
Subsequently, I cut the famous wire to pin 14 of my ECU so I get about 25% more boost (the difference between the start of the stripy yellow section and the end of it) - so I know what a manual car with a 3" pipe must feel like, and I think you'd like it. Cost = zero, as long as the transmission stays intact.
I couldn't quite follow Anders's data - wasn't sure if the 7-11 increase from the rear section came when it was fitted with a bigger downpipe, or without.
But if you plan ECU upgrades a bigger exhaust will come into its own - check out the relative values on Maptun's site for a 200 bhp car, ie.
stage 1 - 245 bhp - software only
stage 2 - 250 bhp - software, air filter and 3" cat back
stage 3 - 270 bhp - software, air filter and full 3" inc. sports cat.
Pretty sure other tuners' sites will suggest similar power improvements - the exhaust is part of the overall system and offers greater benefits in conjuction with other mods.
