noted that it is the bean counters at the auto mfgrs that dictate a lot of things. That's probably the real answer.
A turbo motor is more expensive to build, at least if you do it right, like with the B234 engines in our 9Ks. A V-6 of equal power is much less expensive to build (no turbo, no intercooler, cheaper internals, etc.) and since you wind up selling the car for about the same price, the margins are greater. And that keeps bean counters, stock holders and Wall Street happy.
Plus, you look at some of the V6 engines out there in passenger cars and you find that several of them will get 28 to 31 mpg highway. OK, they don't have the poke of a turbo but for the average driver they are probably fine and that's what the bean counters care about.
I can't imagine having to drive a non-turbo car. And after driving my 9K for a few days, my wife (who is a very gentle driver) asks, when are we getting the Saab wagon? She likes the boost, which her Exploder sure lacks!
