Headlight Lamp Control module: The large solder pads connecting the circuit board to the connector develops microcracks which are hard to see, even with magnification. Just heat up the pads until the solder melts, you may have to add a bit of electronics-type solder (don't use plumbing solder). I use resin-core solder, some people like to use separate flux (helps the solder flow where it needs to go) and solder. Use an appropriate sized soldering iron, i.e. not a mongo-sided one for plumbing. The most difficult part of this procedure is removing the orange plastic cover - you may crack it a bit, don't worry too much about it, it's 14 years old and a bit brittle.

I don't think that the reverse-light wiring is melted, but if so, you will probably find this out after you change the sockets! Easy stuff first! Generally, these lights on not on for long periods of time, so the damage may not be widespread.

What I was more concerned about was the headlight wiring. Running 200W of headlights (2 x 100W bulbs) for extended periods will melt something on a system that is not designed for it. I don't know if the previous owner installed higher-power headlights, but based on what you have said so far I can guess. Try replacing the non-functioning bulb first (again, easy stuff first!), then take a look at the ground connection on the side that isn't working, should be close to the underside of the headlight - you may try to "clean up" the area where the ground wire is attached and the connector lug. After that, you may have a wiring problem that needs to be repaired - isn't that what the shop said??? If you don't want to do the wiring repair yourself, please take the car somewhere else!!!

Where do you live - someone here may have a good recommendation for a SAAB repair specialist.
