As the former owner of an '87 944 Turbo, I would have to agree with your sentiments. They really are an impressive car, especially for the money. I paid $7700 for mine with 120k on it, and it was nearly perfect. Owned by a PCA member that I knew from the club. Recent suspension overhaul with new Bilstein Sports, bushings, SS brake lines, pads/rotors, etc. Mine was Zermatt Silver over burgandy interior, with 17" Cup-2 wheels. It could have passed for a new car, they are simply timeless. Once you get past the lag, acceleration is like the hand of God. I had a Weltmeister chip set, shimmed wastegate, Lindsey boost enhancer, and test pipe (no cat). A friend with a nearly identical set-up put down 270 wHP on a dyno. They are nearly infinitely modd-able, it's just a question of money and desire.
However, I wouldn't buy one if you can't DIY. Parts costs are easily double that of a Saab, and access to most things is difficult. On the upside, there are many parts cars out there, so that can offset the high parts cost a bit. While mine never stranded me, I always found myself having to tinker to keep it running correctly.
If you find a good one, buy it! You won't regret it. If you find a neglected one, keep walking. Nothing is more expensive than a cheap Porsche. I still miss mine, and would love to have another. I traded it for a '95 BMW 540 6-speed, because 944s and baby seats don't work well together.
Thanks for the suspension thread, that's timely info. I plan to place an order for those exact parts today + tie rods, my 224k Aero needs a serious refresh.
