Where does oil pressure come from?

As posted recently, my '95CSE with 182k suffered a sudden drop in oil pressure, and is presumed dead. This surprised me and the indy who specializes in Saabs, as the car has had good care and was expected by me to last well past 250k. Never burned oil,and I was getting 34mpg at 75mph on this trip when it died. Oil pump in reasonably good condition. Engine actually sounds pretty good now, but was making a racket in the top end, presumably because oil pressure was not moving the hydraulic lifters adequately.
So my question is trying to understand where the presumably sudden loss of oil pressure occurred, and/or how? There is no way of knowing for sure without tearing down the engine, I'm just trying to understand how the oil pressure could drop to 5lb. I'm tempted to rebuild the engine because I think it's good, but it doesn't make economic sense to hire done, and I don't have the time to do myself. Still, I'd like to understand some of the possibilities before giving up. I'll take conjecture...
Thanks!
