Sludge is an issue for mainly 1999 through 2003+ Saabs, because they have light pistons and rings that cause a lot of blow by right out of the box. Some of those engines also had cheaper poorly made oil pumps. All in an attempt to obtain better fuel mileage. The water and other combustion gases in the blow by do not get along with engine oils, especially when the crank case ventilation is poor.
The 9000's do not have a sludge problem unless extended mileage oil changes occur. Also the 9000 oil pickup screen has much larger openings than the light piston engines and have much less blow by.
Don Andrews (http://www.saabpros.com) has extensive write ups of the tests and effort he has make in researching the Saab sludging issue. Good reading.
