I do some DIY: take care of oil changes myself, and have replaced numerous items in the past: voltage regulator, plugs, light clusters, numerous interior electrical components, headliner (that was tough), seat motors, other jobs I don't recall. The brake pads have never squeaked but they are low, and the rotors are rusty due to too many winters, I think. Much of this just added up because I turned a blind eye.
These comments have inspired me to take more care of the car, partially because I greeted the idea of owning a Honda with such distaste, so I am going to try and take care of every major problem over the next several weeks. I am confident I can do the brakes myself with the help of an experienced friend.
However, the repair shop called and said they think I need an alternator. They have not tested the alternator nor looked at the brushes but have given me an estimate for $650 with labor and shop supplies. They say that a new VR, which they priced at a worryingly high $80 plus labor (I have bought them before, I know what they cost) would be a temporary patch and do not recommend it. I am beginning to grow wary, but would appreciate recommendations, as I can not do any DIY work while the car sits on their lot without a competent electrical system.
