If a freshly charged battery powered your car for five miles to the shop, a freshly charged battery will probably last the same distance to get you home without the alternator working; if you really want it out of the shop, you can also get it towed home. If you have a big auto parts chain nearby, maybe have them test the charging system - there are several areas besides the alternator that can prevent the battery from being charged, such as the voltage regulator (was the one you installed a Bosch? if not, it's suspect), the cables, corroded connectors, etc.
There are many causes of base boost besides the ECU: there are small switches on the brake and clutch pedal assemblies that will limit the ECU to base boost when engaged or broken, and if your car is a 1994 (maybe?) the notoriously bad cruise control module can also provide a signal that will limit the ECU to base boost - this happened on my 1994.
