I'd have to go look at it and take a picture.
My indy says he has always done 4 quarts. When I got the car in 2003, some uber Saab tech had put on his site that filling to the X in MAX was OK and that he'd never had a chain issue on cars filled to that point. So even though 5 quarts was less than the amount specified I just did it that way--have for the past 14 years. No issues in 145K miles. I figure if it was going to be a problem I'd have seen it by now!
BUT it makes ya wonder what the REAL spec is, especially with the range of numbers you quote. OR... maybe I read it wrong back when I did the first change in 2003.
