Sorry I described the oil thermostat's operation incorrectly.
I don't completely follow what you wrote. "the thermostat works by preventing the oil (from the filter or from the oil cooler circuit?) from flowing right past it (the thermostat?) instead of going out to it (to the oil cooler?)."
When you say the thermostat has no effect on drainage do you mean that if no thermostat was present the oil cooler circuit still would not drain?
This probably would be clear if I crawled under the car and looked. Behind a plug is the thermostat and a spring. Do the theromostat and spring operate in tension against each other? If so then does the spring prevail at temperatures below 225°F?
