Does the oil cooler ever drain? Simon, are you sure that the oil cooler never drains?
I've noticed that the two more credible owners manuals ('94 and '98 which have in common accurate conversions between liters and quarts) have a 0.4 liter difference in the amount of oil they specify for an oil and filter change.
0.4 liters is the capacity of the oil cooler per Saab's service manual.
Also per Saab's service manual the oil cooler thermostat of the 2nd generation B234 engine opens at 107°C which is 225°F. The oil thermostat is located I think in or near the oil filter's housing. It is closer to hot engine surfaces than the sump.
I'm wondering if the '98 manual assumes the thermostat is closed at the time of the oil change and if the '94 manual assumes that the thermostat is open. If so then both are arguably correct.
