vtsaab, I have a similar problem with my 96 Aero 5 spd. The central locking has been flakey for quite some time. I reflowed the solder joints in the central locking controller and it helped briefly. I have the same symptoms. Using the DS door lock, I can usually get the locks to operate in one or more attempts. Sometimes I have to go back and forth five or more times and then it will "take" and cycle the locks. Sometimes it's stubborn and just won't cooperate and I have to lock them manually. Similar with the keyless remote. Sometimes it works peachy, other times I have to hit the button numerous times and it will finally cycle the locks. Sometimes it just won't. My hatch remote button works every time. The central lock controller responds, however weakly, when I hit the remote button or the key. The lights dim slightly or you can hear it make a noise so something is trying to happen but it doesn't have enough ooomph. I think the alarm/remote receiver is working, but the controller is iffy. I'm not sure they're available new any more but this is the first 9000 of seven that's had a problem so maybe used is a good option.
