Yikes, I wish I had done the job more recently so I could remember the details. I can't remember if I had to undo the transmission mount or not, but sounds like it's worth a shot. Worst case you could also loosen the subframe and lower it a bit. Can you tell what the engine is hanging on causing it to lift the car? It could well be the trans mount, or I remember the engine bracket getting caught on the threads of the mount since it doesn't quite lift straight up and causing some issues. I do remember having to go back and forth a bit under the car and to the jack to make sure nothing was caught and ultimately having to lift the engine more than I expected (same with lowering it to make sure it was engaging the new mounts correctly). Even though the new mounts are very stiff they are still slightly flexible, so if it needs a little bending or persuasion to get that last couple millimeters that's ok. I do remember the rear certainly being the harder of the two unfortunately. Good luck!
