I still have the engine support beam that was used when replacing the transmission a few years ago. I was just thinking about giving that a try, though it would probably need additional blocks so it sits a bit higher. (For the trans replacement it did not have to lift the engine, just support it.)
Along the same lines I have a hydraulic shop crane that could be used to pull up the engine from above. It was used previously to move transmissions around for that project.
On the other hand, the old quasimotors site as well as Townsend recommends loosening up the subframe.
