I finally got some time yesterday and tried to clean more of the gunk out of the cooling system. I had put a big bottle of the premium radiator flush and stated it "removes oil" on the label but it didn't do much. I added about a cup of dishwasher gel detergent in 2 gallons of hot water and circulated it for a while. I took it for about a 45 minute drive. Got home and slowly cracked the radiator reservoir cap and let it vent. You could see globs of oil coming to the top and overflowing so I let it keep going for a little bit. I drained the radiator after it cooled and put it back together and refilled with fresh water and drove it around again. Before refilling it I removed the reservoir again and cleaned that separately using degreaser. I will drain it one more time and refill with 50/50 but there is still a lot of oil gunk in the cooling passages. I'm not sure how I'll ever get it all out. I will probably take the cap of the reservoir periodically and stick a small section of rubber hose in like a dip stick. The goo clings on to anything rubber. I'm at the point where I'm going to stop worrying about it. This is an exercise in futility. For the record, this has been the messiest 9000 job I have ever had to do and has produced 25 gallons of oily wastewater that I am going to have to figure out a way to responsibly dispose of. I might try to suck up the oil scum with "oil only" absorbent pads to remove the oil and then flush the water.
