Which device did you disconnect that seemed to solve the problem?
The aux air valve just feeds more air in - it doesn't affect the cold start injector. If the air valve was stuck closed, the car would run rich until the warm-up regulator had gone through its cycle, but only because it was not getting the extra air to go with the extra fuel from the warm-up regulator.
I don't have my electrical diagrams handy, but when I go home for lunch, I will grab them and refresh my memory - but if you could post which item you disconnected, that would make troubleshooting a little easier.
