[oops forgot my sig...]
If you think there could be problems with the fuel pump, try banging on it from below with a rubber mallet a few times. Often you can hit it back into action briefly. See past posts in the archives from SWEDECAR (Anders) on this. I hope it's not your fuel pump since that's an expensive repair.
The fuel filter is a breeze to change but unless you got a really bad batch of fuel it would be unusual to all of a sudden clog so badly you can't start.
If you change the fuel filter, there are 4 washers that should be replaced, one on either side of the banjo bolts and fuel lines. See eeuroparts.com for a diagram although it's pretty obvous. The washers are very cheap.
FPR failures have, I think, been mostly on the 2.0 and 2.3 4-cylinders engines. Most of the time people only experience FPR failure AFTER changing the fuel filter. I don't recall any V6 failures but you could search archives to check. (I changed my fuel filter with no FPR problems but maybe I just got lucky.) It is an expensive part (~$60) if you can't really isolate things and are just guessing.
The throttle body and IAC on the V6 can be cleaned. I did it a couple of months ago and just followed some posts by Dean, V6vert, and michael p. (Search for those posts... also include 'AIC' as a search terms since it's sometimes labeled both ways.) Just look for the intake manifold and go upstream a little; you can't miss the throttle body and the IAC is right by it. It is not as easy to access on the V6 however.
The ignition switch can indeed cause starting problems, but in many (most?) cases, the failure is intermittent and it will not always happen. It will get worse over time. Complete sudden failure is possible but would be less common.
Good luck,
