Chris, it takes a long time to learn about all of the details, so don't feel bad. (E.g., I have a post in Dec 2003 asking about the distributor cap on the V6 which doesn't exist.) It also sounds like you are working on a hard to diagnose problem. At some point you might have to take it to a shop but I know you want to save $ if possible. When you get it all worked out, it would be a good public service to post back here with all symptoms, everything you tried, and the eventual solution.
I don't have info on the normal lifespan of the coil pack, but mine has 142k and is original; there are others on the board with more miles on theirs. In general, it seems that failure is rare. Here is a thread from Anders (SWEDECAR) with part numbers, price, and reliability info. He said that he had never see one go bad as of Dec 2002. http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/NG900/index.html?bID=79411
Based on that thread, $80 seems like a good price. I assume that is for a non-Bosch part. If that fixes it, great, but if it doesn't I would return it and reinstall your original Bosch. More likely that an aftermarket version will fail sooner and cause problems again in the future.
I can't see any reason that the coil pack or crankshaft sensor would go bad after a timing belt change. But you do have to disconnect several sensors and wires to do the job so maybe something got disturbed along the way? Another close look at all vac hoses and wires could be in order.
