The schraeder valve that you found near the the FPR is indeed similar to a tire valve. These have begun to get tired and leak gas on several V6s, see info from michael p a while back

I believe it's just intended for measuring the fuel pressure; Anders has a post or two on it around the same time as the link above.

I don't think this tells you that much about the fuel system other than that some gas is getting in the vicinity. I guess that is not bad! Some day you may want to replace that schraeder valve because of a gas smell.

Not sure what you're looking at, but the V6 does not have a D.I. It has a coil pack that connects to spark plug wires and plugs, no distributor, dist cap, or rotor. The 2.3 NA has a distributor. The 2.0 turbo has a D.I.
