Convertibles, child seats, and 900 vs. 9-3

I'm seriously considering buying my first Saab.
I've been driving a Honda delSol for the last few years, but with our second child on the way, not having a back seat is soon going to be too big of a pain.
I also don't want to give up the open top, if I don't have to.
So - I've been looking a lot of listings for used Saab convertibles. It seems like the 1998-2000's are about what I can afford. Does anyone here have any experience with child seats in convertibles from these years? How well do they fit in the back seat? How much trouble is it to get the kids in and out of the seats in a 2-door?
Also, how much difference is there between the 1998 900, and the 1999 9-3? At first glance they seem pretty similar, but read on a car safety ratings website that the 9-3 is significantly safer. The site rated the 9-3 as "acceptable" and the 900 as only "marginal". Is the 900 really that unsafe?
Can anyone help this poor newbie out?
