The '98 NG900 vert is practically the same as the '99 9-3. The 900 used for the safety ratings was an earlier year (a '96 model IIRC). The '98 received the added side impact protection in the body that the 9-3 has, along with numerous other things that the 9-3 got - I just can't remember what specifically right now besides the obvious like hydraulic clutch, steering wheel, body colored bumpers w/o chrome, etc. The only *major* difference would be the side impact airbags - which would still be only for the front seat occupants. For all intents and purposes, the '98 SE and the '99 S are the same cars.

In my mind, the '98 900 is a slightly safer bet than the '99 9-3 - both great cars, but the '98 was the last year in a run of 5 model years, working out all the kinks, whereas the '99 had just enough changes to be justified as a "new" model, and from there they did have some kinks to work out again...just my opinion though, and probably a bit biased since I have a '98 900 SE vert... ;)
