I have a '98 convertible. We had always used my wife's car when my son was an infant. At about 2, I finally put a car seat in my car. Saab uses a very clever seat belt buckle for securing child seats, that once I figured out how it works made my desire for the lower LATCH anchor points go away. I feed the upper tether behind the seat, into the trunk, and attached to substantial cargo hold-down anchor. I don't recall the year, but at some point the LATCH points became mandatory for all new cars.
At 2, my son was pretty much able to climb himself into and out of his seat on his own, so not much perspective on difficulty with an infant.
