The serpentine belt on your car has 6 ribs on one side which fit into slots on the pulleys they drive - water pump, power steering pump, alternation and a/c compressor. The other side of the belt, the smooth side, runs on the tensioner pulley(s).
Typically, a serpentine belt fails because one of the bearings in the plastic idler pulleys seizes. When that happens, the plastic pully melts into a glob of plastic.
Let us know how the engine runs after replacing the belt and associated pulleys... Ron
