A lot of people want the (perceived?) tossability of the smaller platform. Also, the hatch is a more direct link to the type of car that made Saab famous. The wagon, awesome as it is, is not singularly a Saab, and could conceivably have been put out by Audi, BMW (although probably with not quite so mind-blowing an engine as the present 9-5 Wagon!)
Also, I'm not aware of any strong animosity by 900/93ers toward 9-5 wagon types. Maybe a mild preference. I can't think of any Saaber who doesn't hesitate to point out that the 9-5 wagon would haul groceries, kids while spanking a messy six or eight cyl "sports sedan" up and down the asphalt.
Also, the anti-wagon bias of the sort you identify, DOES have to do with how others percieve you. If you drive a car to/for/near work, or if you are in a posititon where other's perceptions of you affect your job, you'd get where this is going. Appearance, like other things including safety/performance/utility/price is a concern. Not that you have to conform lockstep, but you do have to consider it.
