Relocating to SF Bay Area - Any East Bay experts??? Posted by Randy Thatcher [Email] (#22) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Randy Thatcher) on Mon, 7 Jul 2003 14:30:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'm relocating and this weekend I'll be on a house/apartment/condo finding mission. My wife will attend UC Berkeley, so I don't want to get too far from there.
I'll work from my home a few days a week and spend a few days a week in Fremont at NUMMI (giant auto plant off the highway). A few days a month I'll go to Pleasanton to my company's office. From time to time I'll end up in Cleveland, LA, Mexico, or Japan, but that just requires an airport...
My thoughts are to rent near UC Berekeley. What's good for finding rentals? I'm starting with craigslist, but I'm concerned the rentals will go quickly.
As for real estate, I see that Walnut Creek is affordable and not TOO far for my wife getting to UC Berekeley. It adds even more commute time for me, but I will actually be able to afford to BUY instead of rent. More square footage and a garage are a huge bonus here.
So, can you describe Walnut Creek? Strip Mall heaven? suburbia? retirement village? Pretty decent town? Lap of luxury? snooze-ville?
Where is OK in berkely? Are there places to avoid in Berkeley?
What are decent places to look at in Oakland? I know some of Oakland is pretty rough hood. Near BART would be good for the wife. Think of late 20's liberal SAAB nerd and student-wife. Cool bars and restaurants would be nice.
Where can one buy a condo in a decent place for less than $250k? Berkeley/Oakland?
Any clue what housing association fees are in condos there? a range is fine..
Thanks in advance!
Randy
