as many have mentioned. Would you consider San Francisco itself ? If your wife is going to Berkeley, would you qualify for married student housing ? As with any city that has a large university, rentals tend to be taken quickly. Berkeley and surrounding areas can vary a lot in terms of desirability, depending whether you like young students living in your area or not.

You probably want to stick to a place that is convenient at least to one of you. You don't want to go far for both.

As for Walnut Creek, yes, it is very nice. You don't have to live in Walnut Creek, the surrounding towns are just as nice if not nicer. Oakland, Alameda has improved over the years and I think you should take a good look before going off somewhere else just for the convenience.

Unfortunately, I don't think $250K would get you much for a condo, i.e. either tiny or in a so so neighborhood, in the Bay area.
