and we're doing research right now to make sure that our hypothesis is indeed correct, since there doesn't seem to be much research on this particular topic. Most studies have simply stated that there is a strong deviation from typical fatigue lifetime models, but don't go as far as to speculate on the reason.
This paper has a fairly good description on this debris accumulation effect, if my memory serves me well. I have more references at home, and can post those if you're interested.

I can see the relation to biophysics too...there are some people here working on hip implants (mainly focusing on wear resistance), but maybe they would benefit from knowing about this potential life-enhancing property of ceramics.
Odd...someone else here cares about this stuff! Cool!
