and with more research, they will become more common. Soon, we'll be looking at translucent woven composites, where we can actually see the cracks grow and propagate during fatigue. Give me a few months, and I'll let you know how that works out. Should be interesting.
There is work being done at the University of Porto (Portugal) where they are able to put sensors in the fibres themselves, and subsequently form composites around them. They were then able to determine if the resin had been injected properly around these sensors, and could later detect fibre stress and strain. Cool stuff actually.
This is making my head hurt...but it's good to know that people are constantly pushing the envelope and experimenting with new materials and techniques.
