...I can honestly see where you're coming from. I never looked at it in that way before. However, I don't think you can generalize the entire crowd of readers. But I agree, some could definatly be guilty of following these lifestyle magazines as a guide to follow their lives.
Myself for example, as I stated I am quite active in the art and design world, I don't look at the magazine for anything other than to enjoy the designs, the innovative styles still being discovered, and to see what other concepts are out in the market today, to possibly get ideas for other conceptual designs, whether it be furniture, automobiles, or products. Though I personally have to keep an eye on the market, I can see how others would like to do the same thing without having the urge to reach for their credit card to follow the suggestions.
So I do agree, but I don't... like I said, you can't generalize, but I'm sure what you said is the case with many out there, especially in other high(er) class vehicles (or vehicles which try to be higher classed) where the consumer is simply buying for status and to seem hip to the new trend of designs today.
Related to the designs SAAB chooses to add to the SAAB Magazine's content, I think it reflects other literature by (or made for) SAAB. Check out Made In Trollhatten, I picked it up at SOC 03 for a really good deal, and wow, what an amazing book showing several of SAAB's unique designs related to many of the other current designs out there. The yellow convertible to the designer jucier, the 9-3 brake lights to the Mac desktop, etc.
I will definatly look at those magazines a little different now, but I'll keep looking ( :
